A real favorite of divers and snorkelers, Maui sea turtles can bring many emotions to photography. From majestic to humorous and from awe to ahhhh. This ever expanding collection is a personal quest to always find another. Except where otherwise noted, all of the turtles in this gallery are Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, known in Hawaii as Honu. All images were shot in the wild with special care taken not to disturb the natural habits or habitats of the animals.
~Honu in the Sun~
Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, or honu, and a beautiful Maui Sunburst.
~Out of the Blue~
This turtle is taking advantage of the high tide to reach the red seaweed (algae) growing on the shallow rocks. She must really love this stuff since she takes quite a beating from the waves and rocks to get at it. Here, she is taking a break to chew, get some air, and head back into the fray.
~West Maui Honu~
Cruisin' along the West Maui Mountains, this Honu pauses to smile at the camera.
~Simply Charming~
This young turtle is still un-weathered and colorful.
~Escaping the Waves~
Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle avoiding the waves crashing on the rocks.
~Riding the Surge~
This big male turtle is taking advantage of the high tide to reach the red seaweed (algae) growing on the shallow rocks. He seems to be contemplating his next clump.
~Playing in the Sun~
Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles swimming in the waters off of the coast of Maui. A lovely sight.
~Two Worlds~
Feeding on red algae under a bright sun. Conditions on Maui don't make over/under shots, or splits, happen very often. This was a beautiful day.
~Zoom Zoom Zoom~
Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle cruisin' the reef.
~Coming in for a Landing~
With a diver watching from a respectable distance, this Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle is gracefully landing on the Saint Anthony's Wreck just off the coast of Keawekapu on the island of Maui.
