A real favorite of divers and snorkelers, Maui sea turtles can bring many emotions to photography. From majestic to humorous and from awe to ahhhh. This ever expanding collection is a personal quest to always find another. Except where otherwise noted, all of the turtles in this gallery are Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, known in Hawaii as Honu. All images were shot in the wild with special care taken not to disturb the natural habits or habitats of the animals.
~Lei of Tangs~
This Green Sea Turtle is getting cleaned by Yellow Tangs. Like most surgeonfish, yellow tangs are algae eaters. This works well for the turtles that are unable to wash their own backs. Yellow tangs are the number one fish caught here in Hawaii for export to the aquarium market and are becoming very rare on some the Islands. Please don't buy any wild fish for your aquariums. You will make the turtles very happy.

~The Ascent~
Like us, turtles need to come up eventually for air, just not nearly as soon. This one is making a quick air break from his comfortable resting spot on the Saint Anthony's Wreck off the coast of Maui.

~Out of the Blue~
This turtle is taking advantage of the high tide to reach the red seaweed (algae) growing on the shallow rocks. She must really love this stuff since she takes quite a beating from the waves and rocks to get at it. Here, she is taking a break to chew, get some air, and head back into the fray.
